7.2 magnitude Earthquake displaced California and Chile – Effects the Earth’s axis
NASA says, that the powerful earthquake that rocked California on 4th April has shifted the Calexico city situated near US-Mexico border by two and half feet. The earthquake was a 7.2 magnitude and struck Baja California. The Chile earthquake, in February 2010 hit with a massive force of 8.8 and moved the city of Concepscion to 3 metres to West. This shifting is affecting the axis of the earth and the length of our planet’s days.
Already the length of the day of Chile has been changed by 1.26 microsecods.
The earthquake that hit California, in April, was one of the strongest quakes recorded by the region for the past 120 years; The quake shifted the entire region by 31 inches. It also caused almost one thousand after shocks which caused even more changes to the region. Several hundred people were injured and two people were killed during the earthquake.
More more than 400 people died in the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile. Over 1.5 million people were affected and triggered a Tsunami warning along the Pacific coasts. It was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded, in South America, and tremors were felt by many other countries in the area.
The NASA radar images show the shifting of these regions caused by the Earthquake. The NASA researchers are now focussing on studying how far north the El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake, of California, has caused the fault to move. The results of this research should be interesting, to say the least.
